“Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?” Albus asks, as he wraps his arms around his boyfriend to give him a hug. “I don’t mind, honestly. I’m not scared of your father.”
“I am,” Scorpius mumbles, but Albus knows that he’s just being overdramatic and trying to stall. “What if…”
“He loves you, Scorp. I’m sure it’ll be fine.”
“I should have told him years ago.”
“True,” Albus laughs, before giving him a kiss and letting go of him. “But you didn’t. And now you don’t have a choice, so…”
“Will you be here when I get back?”
“Of course.” Albus flashes a reassuring smile. “I love you.”
“Love you, too.”
As soon as Scorpius steps out of the fireplace at his father’s home, he regrets telling Albus to stay home. He could really do with his support right now. But there is no time to go and get him, because his father steps into the room, a loving smile on his face.
“I’ve missed you!” he exclaims, before throwing his arms around his son. “Goodness, you look…”
“What?” Scorpius chuckles nervously as he frees himself from his father’s grip. He self-consciously wraps his arms around himself, hoping that the oversized sweater is enough to hide his growing belly. Hoping that his father hasn’t just felt it. But Draco doesn’t seem to have noticed, because he’s still smiling.
“You look well,” he says. “I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s something different about you…”
“I changed my hair,” Scorpius quickly says.
“Hmm… that must be it. Now, how about a cup of tea?”
“What have you been up to?” Draco asks, when he joins Scorpius with their tea. “I feel like I haven’t seen you in months!”
“It’s only been…” Months, Scorpius realises, since he had stopped coming home for their weekly dinners. “College has been crazy, you know?”
“How’s it going?”
“It’s alright.” Scorpius shrugs. “Very different from Hogwarts, but… it’s alright.”
Draco nods, a knowing smile on his face.
“So... what’s the occasion?”
“Huh?”
“Why are you here?” Draco asks. “You look as nervous as you did when you were about to tell me that you were moving out, so… what is it this time? You’re not in trouble, are you?”
“I’m not,” Scorpius quickly says, his cheeks flushing. “Well…”
“Are you? Can I help?”
“I doubt you’ll want to,” Scorpius mumbles into his tea, but when he looks up, he finds his father watching him with a cocked eyebrow. “I ehm…”
“Go on, spit it out.”
“I was going to tell you this years ago, but… well, I didn’t really think I had to, you know?” Scorpius rambles nervously. “I mean, it’s unfair how we have to tell people, when others can just… be.”
“Scorpius…”
“I’m gay,” he blurts out, half-expecting the world to come tumbling down around him. Instead, his father gives a nod, before putting his tea down. “You knew?”
“I did,” Draco confirms. “Seeing the way you were with Albus…”
“You know about me and Al?”
“Yes,” Draco laughs. “What? Did you think you were any good at keeping that a secret? I heard him sneaking out, Scorpius. More than once.”
“Oh… why didn’t you say anything?”
“Should I have?” Draco asks, but Scorpius isn’t quite sure what the answer is. Whether he would have preferred to keep the relationship to himself, and if his father knowing about it only would have made things uncomfortable. Or perhaps if his father had said something, he wouldn’t have felt like he had been walking around with this big secret. “I’m sorry,” Draco says, a guilty look on his face. “I didn’t think it was any of my business. I’d figure you’d tell me, or…”
“Are you…,” Scorpius begins, not sure if he dares to finish the question.
“Am I what?”
“Are you alright with me… with us…?”
“I love you,” Draco reassures him. “And your happiness is all that matters to me. If Albus makes you happy, then…”
“Would you still be happy for me if we ehm… if we messed up and got into trouble?”
“What kind of trouble?” Draco asks, the loving smile on his face now replaced by a look of worry.
“I’m pregnant.”
“You’re what?”
“Pregnant?” Scorpius mumbles. “We didn’t mean for it to happen. Not yet, anyway! But we just… it just happened.”
“It just happened?” Draco sighs. “These things do not ‘just happen’, Scorpius.”
“I know…”
Draco stares down at the pot of tea on the table, a pensive look on his face, and Scorpius takes a deep breath, preparing himself for the telling-off of a lifetime.
“Do not hate me for asking, but is this what you want?” Draco finally asks. “Having a child, at your age, it’s…” He sighs, looking worried. “If you don’t think you are ready for this, then…”
“I want to keep it,” Scorpius quickly says, “Me and Al, we’ve talked about it, and we know it’s going to be a lot of work raising a child, but we want to keep it.”
Draco gives a small nod, for a split-second looking heartbroken, but then he flashes a smile, and he wraps his arms around his son.
“I think we can do it, dad,” Scorpius mumbles into his father’s shoulder, still not sure what to make of his reaction.
“I know you can,” Draco reassures him. “You are going to make wonderful parents, Scorpius. But…”
“There it is,” Scorpius sighs, freeing himself from his father’s grip. “The but.”
“But if you ever need any help, don’t hesitate to come to me,” Draco continues. “Anything I can help you with…”
“Oh…”
“What did you think I was going to say?” Draco laughs. “Did you think I was going to be upset with you?”
“I don’t know… I know this isn’t what you wanted for me. Not yet, anyway. Not with…”
“Not with someone you love?” Draco asks, a confused look on his face. “You’re happy, aren’t you?”
“I am.”
“Then why would I be upset?”
Scorpius shrugs, having put off telling his father about Albus for years – too scared to face his reaction. He had come up with dozens – if not hundreds of different scenarios of how that conversation was going to go, all of them ending with his father telling him he never wants to see him again.
“What are you going to do now?” Draco asks. “Are you planning to finish your studies, or…”
“I might need to take some time off,” Scorpius admits, “but I want to go back as soon as I can. Me and Al, we want to find a place to live… we want to do this right. Be a family, you know?”
“Will you let me help you with that?”
“What do you mean?”
“Finding a place to live.”
“Oh, we were just going to find a flat,” Scorpius quickly says, a little embarrassed when he remembers the place they had gone to see the other week. “Just something small… something we can afford,” he adds, mumbling the last part.
“I know you hate to take anything from me, but I know that your mother would not want her grandchild to live in some…” He swallows back the rest of his words, not wanting to insult his son. “She would want the best for you. For all of you. So please let me buy you a nice house. Not a…”
“Dad! You can’t just buy us… that’s ridiculous,” Scorpius laughs.
“Why not?” Draco shrugs. “You’re my son.”
“I know, but… that’s too much.”
“It’s not. Now… have you told the Potters yet?”
“We have,” Scorpius admits. “I’m sorry we told them first.”
“That’s alright.” Draco shrugs it off with a reassuring smile. “What did they say?”
“They’re happy for us. Worried, but happy. Ginny is really excited to be a grandmother,” Scorpius says, the smile on his face growing bigger when he remembers how she hadn’t been able to stop crying when they had told her and Harry.
“Now, about that boyfriend of yours.”
“What about him?” Scorpius asks.
“I’d like to meet him.”
“You’ve met him, dad! Many of times.”
“I’ve met your best friend, not your… the father of my first grandchild,” Draco says, a proud smile on his face. “I’d like to see him.”
“I could go and get him?” Scorpius suggests, regretting it as soon as the words have left his mouth. But his father gives a nod, so he gets up, and within minutes he’s back at the Potters.
Albus is waiting by the fireplace for him, and when he sees him, he jumps up to pull him into his arms.
“How did it go?”
“He wants to see you.”
“Me?” Albus asks. “Why? What did he say? Did you tell him you’re pregnant?”
“I did.” Scorpius nods. “But he wants to see you. Now.”
“Now?” Albus asks, looking worried. “Okay…”
They go back to the Malfoy home, and as soon as they step out of the fireplace, Draco steps up to them, a stern look on his face.
“So you got my son pregnant, huh?”
“Sir…”
“Did you?” Draco spits out, looking like he’s about to breathe fire.
“I’m sorry, Mister Malfoy. But we… I love him!” Albus blurts out, his face having gone a dark shade of red. He half-expects Draco to jump him, and he’s about to tell Scorpius to make a run for it, when he hears him chuckling.
“Dad!”
Albus breathes a sigh of relief when he sees the big grin on Draco’s face and he realises that he was just teasing him. But when Draco pulls him in for a hug, he quickly tenses up again. Not quite sure how to react. Never having been hugged by the older Malfoy before.
“Congratulations are in order, I hear?” Draco asks, ignoring Albus’ awkwardness. “You are going to be a father?”
“Oh… yes,” Albus chuckles, nervously looking over his shoulder to check with Scorpius. “We ehm…”
“My father offered to help find us a place to live.”
“Really?”
“Don’t sound so surprised, Albus,” Draco laughs. “I’m happy for you.”
Scorpius grabs Albus’ clammy hand, and he flashes a reassuring smile, not failing to notice the confused look on his face. He was probably expecting the worst-case scenario too, no matter his reassurances to Scorpius before he had left.
“Thank you, sir.”
“Call me Draco, please. After all, we’re family now.”
