Hermione sat behind her desk, eating the salad she'd brought for lunch as she went through the latest proposal she planned to bring before the Wizengamot.
"Busy?" Teddy stuck his head in her office, an impish smile on his face.
"Always," she replied. She set her salad aside with a frown. It wasn't sitting well in her stomach. Perhaps the boiled eggs were spoiled. "Did you need something?"
"I'm glad you asked." He started to come around her desk but she held up a hand.
"Not now, Teddy." She reached into the top drawer for a piece of candied ginger and chewed slowly, settling her stomach enough to continue working.
"Here are the rest of the documents you asked for," he said, setting down a stack of files and half a dozen scrolls.
"Thank you." Hermione reached for the scroll closest to her but noticed that Teddy was hesitating. "Yes?"
He stepped closer again and leaned toward her, lowering his voice. "Are you free later?" He lay his hand on her forearm and gently caressed it.
Picturing their most recent rendezvous, a wave of lust washed over her. She swallowed and nodded.
"Brilliant." He pressed a kiss to her cheek, the scent of his cologne further adding to Hermione's sudden arousal. "Come by my flat?"
Hermione nodded. It was much safer there as they were less likely to have someone see them together in his Muggle neighbourhood.
She watched Teddy walk out, shutting her office door behind her. She looked at the salad but decided against having more.
~*~
Hermione hadn't planned to have an affair with Teddy Lupin. He was Harry's godson, for goodness sake.
He had chosen not to follow Harry's—or his mother's—footsteps into the Auror Corps, and instead applied to apprentice to Hermione in the newly restructured Ministry law offices.
Offices she had lobbied for herself after finding the judicial system to be archaic and inherently unfair.
But he was charming, tender, chivalrous. Between his grandmother and Harry's influence, he was the perfect gentleman.
While not explicitly against Ministry regulations, Hermione was his supervisor. Their relationship was inappropriate at best.
She found it hard to regret it, though, when she was wrapped in his arms, his lips against her ear whispering all the things a woman wanted to hear.
So they kept their relationship quiet. She cared for him but it's not as if they planned to marry or have children. Her work was her first priority and he'd known that from the start.
And he still wanted her.
~*~
Hermione woke with strong arms wrapped around her—their naked bodies twined together—and the desperate need to vomit.
She tried to untangle herself from Teddy but, fearing she wouldn't get to the loo in time, reached for her wand and conjured a basin.
A warm, broad hand settled on her back, the other tugged her hair away from her face.
"Are you all right?" Teddy asked, rubbing soothing circles.
"Must have been that salad yesterday." Hermione Vanished the basin. "I felt off after I ate it."
Teddy tugged her to him, pulling them both back into bed, then tugging the duvet over them. Hermione closed her eyes, relieved that the nausea had passed.
"Maybe you're pregnant," he said, chuckling.
Hermione's eyes snapped open. She was taking the potion to prevent conception and never failed to miss a dose. It was ninety-nine percent effective.
"I should go," she said suddenly, scrambling out of his embrace. "I need fresh clothes for work."
"You should just keep some things here," Teddy said, yawning. "I don't mind."
Hermione quickly found her discarded clothes from the night before and pulled them on.
If she hurried, she could make an appointment at St Mungo's before work.
~*~
Hermione sat at her desk and stared at the results from her appointment that morning.
Pregnant.
It had been ten years since she realised that she would likely never have a child and had resigned herself to the fact. It's not that she didn't want one, exactly, it just wasn't in the cards for someone like her.
She also had choices to make. Should she tell Teddy or seek a termination without his knowledge? She knew he'd want to keep the baby. He was so like Harry in that way. He adored all his Weasley cousins as they were growing up and had been happy to babysit as a teenager.
Did she plan to make a relationship with Teddy himself or would they co-parent without taking their relationship to the next step? That might have been the more difficult question. She liked Teddy, she cared for him, he treated her well and yes, he was good in bed.
Did she love him? No, not yet anyway.
Could she? She closed her eyes and tried to picture her future ten years from now, Teddy and their child by her side.
"Hey, why are you crying?"
Hermione quickly wiped her eyes as Teddy walked into her office, immediately coming behind the desk and wrapping her in his arms, his hands running up and down her back comfortingly.
"All right?" he asked again after a few minutes.
Hermione pulled back and nodded. "Everything's going to be fine."
"Do you want to tell me what's the matter?"
Teddy looked so concerned, so tender, so loving that it nearly made Hermione start crying again.
"I'm pregnant," she whispered then cleared her throat. "I got the results this morning."
Teddy's eyes widened. "You are? But I thought...." he trailed off. "It doesn't matter now. What's your plan?"
Hermione blinked. "My plan?"
Teddy clasped her hands in his and held them tight. "You always have a plan."
Not wanting to admit that she didn't have one, she said, "We'll talk about this tonight, all right? Away from the office?"
Teddy nodded and kissed her hands before letting them go. He straightened up and walked toward the door. "Harry is going to be over the moon," he said then pulled the door closed behind him.
Hermione realised that they'd have to tell everyone about their affair. "Oh my God."
Teddy was right though. Harry, at least, would be thrilled.
~*~
Hermione spent the next few weeks accepting the fact that she was pregnant, planned to keep both the baby and Teddy and making changes in her office.
The first one was having Teddy assigned to one of her co-workers. She should have done it the moment they became involved, if not before, but it was a good step to removing any impropriety.
What's done was done, both in terms of their working relationship and their personal one.
She and Teddy agreed that the first person they needed to tell was Harry, as he was her best friend and his godfather.
"Teddy!" Harry said, stepping through the front door of Teddy's flat and pulling Teddy into an embrace. "Thanks for inviting me to dinner. I don't see enough of you these days."
"Thanks for coming," Teddy said. Hermione could tell he was practically vibrating with excitement. They had planned to tell Harry after supper but she could see now that would never happen. He was more likely to spontaneously combust than hold his tongue for the next two hours.
"Hermione? What are you doing here?" Harry asked, hugging her as well. "Don't tell me she has you working as hard as she does," he said to Teddy when he stepped back.
Teddy laughed. "As if that was even possible. No one works as hard as Hermione." He was looking at her with such affection, Hermione could feel a blush creeping across her face.
"I know that's true," Harry agreed. "So what's going on then?"
"Can't a man invite his boss and his godfather over for dinner?" Teddy asked with a grin as he handed Harry a bottle of ale.
Harry took a long swig of it, eyes going from Teddy to Hermione and back again. "Why don't you tell me why you're here, Hermione?"
"Well," Hermione started and then stopped, her throat dry. She tried clearing it. Teddy handed her a glass of water. "Thanks," she said after she drank half of it. She gave him the glass back and he sat down beside her on the sofa, closer than he should have if they weren't already involved. They'd agreed that Hermione should break the news. She took a deep breath and tried again. "We have something we'd like to tell you."
She watched as Harry's smile grew wider as he looked from her to Teddy again. "Yes?"
Hermione clasped Teddy's hand. "Teddy and I are in a relationship."
"That's brilliant." Harry lifted his beer bottle in a toast. "I couldn't be happier for you."
"That's what you think," Teddy murmured, making Hermione giggle with relief.
"There's a bit more," Hermione said. "I'm pregnant."
Harry's mouth fell open. "You're joking."
Hermione shook her head as Teddy replied, "Not a bit. We're having a baby!"
"Bloody hell!" Harry stood up and hugged Teddy. "That's wonderful, Teddy. I'm so happy for you."
"Thanks, Harry," Teddy replied.
Hermione stood next and let herself be wrapped in Harry's arms.
"Congratulations, love," he said softly and she couldn't help it, she started to cry. "Shhh, there's nothing to cry about."
"It's these ridiculous hormones," she said. "Everything makes me weepy. It's embarrassing."
The kitchen timer went off and broke the mood.
"Have a seat," Teddy said, heading toward the kitchen.
Left alone, Harry held Hermione at arm's length. "You good?"
Hermione smiled. "Terrified but yes, it's brilliant."
"You have to tell me everything," Harry said, pulling out a chair for her.
"Everything?" she asked, laughing.
Harry guffawed. "No, not everything."
"Dinner is served," Teddy said, carrying in the roast chicken and veg he'd made for supper.
As they ate, Hermione listened to Teddy and Harry catching up on work and family.
Everything would be all right, she was sure of it.
